When is the best time to plant spinach?
Well, in spring and autumn (they were in the group of the post what to plant in September), they don't like the heat at all, because the flowers come out immediately and the leaves become bitter.
From 24 or 26 degrees it is advisable to put up a shading net. It tolerates the cold better, but if it is going to reach 8 or 10 degrees below zero, it is better to cover it as well.
What should the soil for spinach planting be like?
It prefers loose, fertile, well-drained and deep soils. Spinach will have nitrogen and potassium needs.
Nitrogen can be provided with nettle slurry in irrigations and potassium with Russian comfrey slurry.
How is it planted?
It is sown from seeds, which should be left to soak for 24 hours before sowing, or use a seedbed and transplant when they are 10 to 12 cm long.
It is done in rows directly in the soil at a depth of one centimetre and between 12 to 15 cm between plants. The rows shall be spaced every 30 cm.
Once the seeds have been deposited, compact them a little and water them a little.
They are then covered with mulch, worm castings or coconut fibre.
And then we put a thermal blanket over it to keep it warm and moist.
Do not plant above 27 or 28 degrees, as at that temperature the seeds will not germinate, ideally between 5 and 8 degrees.
How is it watered?
They appreciate moist soil, but never waterlogged. One or two waterings per week will suffice.
When can I harvest my spinach?
After 20 days, the leaves are already showing and 40 days after sowing you will be able to harvest your spinach leaves. First the outer ones by hand by cutting with scissors from the stem.
If you want the whole bush, it will be done underneath the first leaves, but we do not advise you to do this because you will no longer have spinach to cut.
And so we continue and have spinach to enjoy on our plates until flowering.
At flowering you can let one grow to collect the seeds.
Some curiosities and tips:
- Works well with cabbage, beetroot, cauliflower or broccoli.
- It does not work alongside chard as they are of the same family.
- When it is 4 or 5 cm long, thin out the plants, leaving only those that will continue to grow with the appropriate spacing (as you will see many shoots).
As you have seen, planting spinach is very easy and you will be able to enjoy it almost all year round with your family or friends.
