This is a question that many future vegetable gardeners ask themselves before they have a vegetable garden for rent: I already have a vegetable garden and now... What can I plant? We wrote a post about important concepts of "how to set up my basic vegetable garden", but now we are going to talk about the main crops among all the variety.

We all arrive loaded with doubts such as: Will this garden meet my vegetable needs? Will I be able to wear it? Don't worry, you're not the only one.

Like everything worthwhile in life, a vegetable garden has its challenges, but it will be like a good friend that you will get to know and your garden will probably become a haven of peace for you and your daily life.

If your main question is: am I going to have my needs met? The answer is yes.

In a 50 to 100m2 garden, you will be able to grow enough crops to supply a family of 3 to 4 people.

The truth is that practically all the professional allotment gardeners that you see in Gardenphy will help and advise you with this but, if you are one of those who need to have this very clear before renting your allotment, here we will be happy to guide you.

When deciding what to plant in a vegetable garden, there are factors that will influence us, such as the sowing season we are in.

The main seasons are basically 2: spring and autumn will be the strongest and then there are crops that are for the whole year (there are quite a few) and others that have their preferences in the summer.

One of the most important factors is also going to be the crop partnership. The plants have different needs and we have to plant vegetables that complement each other so that they don't steal nutrients from each other and we can have good plants to put on the table.

Here we are going to talk about the 12 basic plant crops for an urban vegetable garden, which also coincide with the most widely consumed vegetables in Spain, the ones we eat every day, raw or cooked in stews, single dishes or salads.

The 12 basic crops (we have put them in bold) to plant in your home garden are the following with good associations:

  1. Tomato: It associates well with carrots and basil.
  2. Lettuce: Partners well with cabbage, chard, radish, beetroot, onion and leek.
  3. Onion: Partners well with lettuce, cabbage, beetroot and cauliflower.
  4. Cucumber: It goes well with chard.
  5. Pepper: It goes well with carrots.
  6. Endive: Good with garlic
  7. Potatoes: Good association with courgette

If you set up your garden with all these crops, you are already set for the whole year, and later on you will be able to add more as you feel like it.
